Abstract

The NBS4School project aims to promote a shift in the traditional way that climate change education is usually provided, moving from ‘learning about’ climate change to ‘learning for addressing climate change” through an action-oriented pedagogy, focused on the empowerment of students for active environmental citizenship.

The project’s objectives are:

  1. To develop new knowledge for integrating NBS and citizen science in primary education around Europe;
  2. To train primary school teachers and provide them with teaching and learning materials that will improve their competences in action-oriented climate change education based on NBS.
  3. To promote students’ interest in STEM by combining NBS with citizen science offering an interdisciplinary approach for developing new partnerships among schools, research institutions and local communities;
  4. To demonstrate the educational potential of NBS through real life implementation at schools and collect evidence about their contribution in developing student’s competences for climate change and increasing their interest and participation in science and civic matters.

To achieve these objectives, the project will bring together stakeholders and target groups (teachers, students, parents, researchers, education designers, environmental scientists) and engage them in codesign, co-creation, testing, piloting, validation, sharing and promotion activities.

As such the concrete results expected by the project are:

R1: A study on Good Practice of NBS in School Education that will address the needs of education designers, teachers and headteachers, and serve as a reference point for understanding the use and educational value of NBS at schools.
R2: A Teacher Training Package on NBS, offering training material and a comprehensive MOOC to develop teachers understanding and skills in “Activist Science Education” an innovative and socially/environmentally beneficial pedagogy, that includes the concepts of NBS and CS and offers the foundation of the NBS4School curriculum.
R3: The NBS4School teaching and learning materials that aim to directly support primary education teachers into designing and implementing NBS at their settings.
R4: An NBS & Citizen Science Toolkit that will assist teachers into designing citizen science initiatives and combine them with NBS, in collaboration with local research institutes.
R5: Tools for evaluating learning outcomes of students involved in NBS, that will provide practical methods for assessing the impact of NBS on students learning, engagement and wellbeing.
