Detalhe
The conference emphasizes the importance of the professional induction phase and acknowledges its crucial role in shaping the future of the teaching profession. European research highlights the challenges faced by teachers, such as a lack of support, social recognition, and adequate preparation, particularly in the early years of their careers. Induction programmes are vital in responding to these challenges, bridging the gaps in initial teacher education, and connecting theory with practice. Induction comprises systematic and collaborative processes of professional development, where experienced teachers act as mentors, guiding and supporting their colleagues.
The conference highlights the need for formal training for mentors and the transformative impact of certified mentor training programmes on shaping the teaching career. The results of LOOP model – a Teachers’ Induction Programme based on a Mentoring Programme – implemented in Croatia, Slovenia, Spain, Greece, Italy, and Portugal will be presented and discussed. The model seeks to contextualize national European differences and provides a valuable tool for education systems to support beginning teachers in adapting to the new workplace culture.
Throughout the conference, discussions and presentations revolve around the organization and characteristics of induction and mentoring programs, the implementation and experimentation process, focusing on increased accessibility, enhanced teacher well-being, and motivation at different stages of their professional careers. Reflection will be produced on the importance of supporting beginning teachers by creating opportunities that promote excellence in teaching and improving the quality, attractiveness, and retention in the teaching profession, oriented towards continuous professional development.
The conference aims to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, collaborative discussions, and actionable insights between different stakeholders (e.g., teachers, mentors, policy-makers, researchers, teachers training centers, national education administrations, school leaders) that will contribute to the advancement of effective induction and mentoring practices for teachers across Europe. The roles and responsibilities of various actors involved in this transformative process and the need for political commitment to promote effective changes will be highlighted to empower teachers, rethink structure and career guidance, and enhance their ability to navigate the educational system effectively.
